When it comes to besties, Christmas shopping ought to be a cakewalk. But sometimes finding the perfect gift isn’t that simple. If your girl is anything like us, she’s mega discerning. A scented candle just won’t do and neither will mall crowds, so here we present 60 perfect Christmas gift ideas for your best friend, purchasable directly online.

Perfectly timed for the holiday season, two of fashion’s definitive It girls released books this season. If your best friend is a Man Repeller disciple, snag her the blogger turned writer’s first book, Man Repeller: Seeking Love, Finding Overalls. If the Brit scene’s more her thing, pick up It, a lovely collaged lesson in cool by Alexa Chung.

As per the season, the ultimate infinity scarf also makes the perfect gift, with Vocado’s thick knit version ranking high on our cozy scale. Another goodie: The Drake General Store’s Shared onesie makes the cutest accoutrement for modern day slumber parties. And because sharing is caring, CB2’s rocking iPhone speaker splitter allows you to both listen through the same device.

New York Fashion Week backstage beauty: Denim-blue “homemade glam” eyes at Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring 2014

“You’ll have to stretch this into a story,” said makeup artist Dick Page by way of explaining the extremely simple beauty look he created for Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring 2014. But simple in this case didn’t mean neutral or natural; it meant one big swoop (Page called it a “half-moon”) of bright blue shadow, a blend of Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Color in “Ice” and a blue powder shadow from Shiseido’s limited edition Eye Color Bar. And that was it: no cheek, no lip, no brow. “She’s lazy or high or both. It’s kind of like, homemade glam.”

The hair also shared that languid, DIY feeling. Guido Palau for Redken gave the models a grungy, but natural look. He used a barrel iron to give super-straight hair a nice bend at the neck and some movement at the ends, and worked in Redken Diamond Oil near the roots to give it a lanky quality. “It’s a little rock and roll, but not in a beachy way, more in a nighttime way. The flatness to the head and off-centeredness are the keys to the look.” Read more »

fall transition makeup

With September rolling in this (long) weekend, it might be time to finally admit that summer is coming to an end. It’s time to say goodbye to our favourite warm weather-inspired beauty trends and embrace what fall has to offer. Spring’s bright lipsticks and summer’s superfluous bronzer will be dearly missed, but with the fall beauty guide out, our anticipation to try the ombre lips of Christian Dior, the fluffy hair of Marc by Marc Jacobs and the divine red eyeshadow of Gucci is at an all time high. There is no question that this fall it’s all about being bold.

But if you’re not a drop-everything-and-go-for-it kinda gal, the best way to test out a new fall trend is to ease your way in. Which means keeping some of your spring and summer favourites going strong as the seasons change. To help with the transition, we asked the Beauty Panel to share which summer styles they’re keeping into fall and how they’re making it work.

Challenge 25: How do you transition your summer hair and makeup into fall? See the answers now! »

If there were an award for Toronto’s most fashionable twins, Samantha and Caillianne Beckerman would win it year after year. The identical duo’s love for a kaleidoscopic magpie blend of designer duds has not only become a staple on the Toronto fashion scene, but on the web as well, where they boast a cool 44,000 Instagram fans. To boot, the sisters are H&M’s official fashion bloggers and have previously collaborated with Coach, Aldo, Bulgari and Teen Vogue, just to name a few. So, how do they do it? The Beckerman sisters really seem to have fun with fashion. Definitive subscribers of a “more is more” sensibility, the duo are constantly dressing up for each other on their blog Beckerman Bite Plate and well, we just can’t get enough. The twins let us inside their fabulous Mary Poppins bags for a peek at what they carry with them on a daily basis. The results, as you would imagine, are some of the most vibrant and fun imagery we’ve seen all week!

Luella Bartley appointed design director at Marc by Marc Jacobs

Comments

Luella Bartley Marc by Marc Jacobs

Looks like you can’t have it all. Or that’s the message that’s coming across with the recent staff shift over at Marc Jacobs. Jacobs, who for the past 13 years has been acting as creative and design director for Marc Jacobs, Marc by Marc Jacobs and as artistic director at Louis Vuitton, is finally lightening his load. The designer is handing over the torch for his Marc by Marc Jacobs label to Luella Bartley and Katie Hillier.

Bartley, whose own label Luella folded four years ago after a major investor pulled out unexpectedly, has been greatly missed on the fashion circuit. The designer, who was once thought to be on her way to becoming the next big thing in British fashion, is ready for a come back and what better place to start. The situation is win-win for both Bartley and Marc Jacobs International, who’s own CEO Robert Duffy has recently commented on the increasing staleness of the diffusion line. Bartley’s old label was a favourite to hip-young-things like Alexa Chung, Sienna Miller and Chloë Sevigny. As a designer she’s been praised for her fun and quirky aesthetic, and is sure to breath some je ne sais quoi back into the Marc by Marc Jacobs brand.
