Afternoon Delight: Give your nails the ultimate iridescent update with M.A.C’s Pink Pearl topcoat

I am not someone who’s ever been drawn to the terms ‘pink’ or ‘pearl.’ I’m pretty sure I just rolled my eyes while typing those words out of sheer habit. However, M.A.C Nail Transformations in Pink Pearl will make even the most infuriating angst-ridden youths (me) consider switching over to the light side. The topcoat can be applied over any dry shade for a soft finish that’s pearly, iridescent and just plain lovely. The Nail Transformations collection also comes in topcoats like Texturize (for a leather-like effect), Shadow (a sheer blackening topcoat), and other pearl shades (green, gold and blue).

Nail art’s not quite dead, but the baroque period is definitely over, as these five fresh-from-the-runways trends show. We’re in a minimalist phase, embracing subtle detailing, a more subdued palette and considerably less sparkle.

OPI by Gwen Stefani nail polish intro

When we think of Gwen Stefani’s signature style a few things come to mind: platinum hair, a midriff-baring top and, of course, red lips! Now, thanks to OPI, the musician’s covetable style is being bottled up for an exclusive nail polish collaboration. The seven-piece Gwen Stefani by OPI collection will hit shelves in January 2014 and features a number of finishes that are new to OPI, as well as a super-exclusive nail art set.

“Over & Over A-Gwen”—a luscious red that no doubt took inspiration from Stefani’s go-to lipstick shade—will be paired with Swarovski black crystals and metallic studs  in a boxed set that’s sure to be on every nail art fan’s must-have list. (Even better, it will sell for less than $20!) As for the new polish finishes, “Push and Shove” may just rival the nail art in terms of flashiness. It’s a chrome polish with a mirror-like finish, but unlike other chrome polishes, “Push and Shove” requires a special base coat (named “Lay Down That Base”) to ensure maximum reflection. We cannot wait to see swatches of this high-shine colour in action. Read more »

Listen up country music fans: Nicole by OPI has just announced their upcoming 2014 celebrity nail polish partnership and it is none other than six-time Grammy award winner Carrie Underwood.

Inspired by the experiences and interests of the country star singer, the Carrie Underwood and Nicole by OPI collection will feature 14 new nail lacquers. With colours that ranges from deep purple hues to sparkly glitters to a variety of pink shades, they’re all fit for the nails of any country—or city—princess. And the witty polish names are exactly what we’ve come to expect from OPI, from the classic red “American as Apple Pie” shade to the a pearl-shimmer polish dubbed “Sing You Like a Bee.” But above all else, we’ve got our eyes on “Carrie’d Away,” a gold textured shade exclusively designed for Underwood.

The limited edition collection will be available in January 2014, but given how many country music award shows occur in the fall, if we were Carrie Underwood we’d ask our manicurist to borrow a few shades in advance. We’ll be keeping our eyes on your nails, Carrie!

I like to give my nails a break from polish every so often, but they look so dull. How can I make them look their best?
While we can all be slaves to the polish bottle, bare nails can be quite modern and, right now, are remarkably on-trend. If your nails have taken a bit of battering after multiple polish changes with minimal breaks in between, using a nail buffer, such as Quo’s Ergo Buffer ($6, at Shoppers Drug Mart), can actually help stimulate circulation to your nail beds. Buffing encourages nails to grow while smoothing out the nail surface, thus making them look and feel healthier. Use the black nail file side of the Ergo Buffer to shape nails, moving on to the blue side to buff nails lightly, and finally use the purple interior side of the buffing tool to bring nails to a smooth, glossy shine. The best summer nail polish colours: 7 Beauty Panel favourites (and some nail art, too!)

summer nail art

It would be an understatement to say that nail art hasn’t completely saturated the beauty world. From Anne Hathaway’s neon manicure at the Met gala to Hailee Steinfeld’s pop art nails at Comic Con, nail art is still going strong throughout summer.

Although scrolling through thousands of nail art images on Pinterest may be one way to get inspired, the Beauty Panel is here to lend us a hand.
