Beauty fix: Dry shampoo on-the-go, the latest in eyeliner and more

Every week our Beauty Fix columnist takes on your questions about makeup, skincare, hair and more. Have a beauty question we haven’t answered? Email us at or ask away in the comments below.

I’ve gotten the hang of gel liner, but I find the gel pot and brush routine sort of fussy. Can I use anything to streamline my application?
Until recently, the application of gel liner involved, at minimum, potted gel eyeliner and a liner brush. Depending on skill level, a bit of mapping out of one’s desired eyeliner shape may be carried out with eyeshadow or an eyeliner pencil. If you’re beyond the novice stage, then you’re ready for the ease and convenience of Benefit’s latest innovation, They’re Real! Push-Up Liner ($29, This twist-up pen houses a matte black, waterproof gel formula that’s on the drier side, allowing it to set quickly (ideal for anyone who experiences liner transfer to their lids). The formula is dispensed through a soft, flexible silicone tip that actually pushes your lashes down in order to apply liner as close to your lashes as possible, eliminating that annoying flesh gap between lashes and liner.

What’s in your bag, Tamara Mellon?

What’s in your bag, Tamara Mellon? »

In just over 10 years, Tamara Mellon has established herself as a titan of the fashion world. The former accessories editor turned CEO of Jimmy Choo built the label from the ground up, making it one of the most recognized names in luxury footwear and accessories (and worth upwards of $100 million to boot). After leaving the company in 2012 and penning an ultra-revealing autobiography In My Shoes, Mellon went back to the drawing board, launching a namesake label of her own last fall. Consisting of slick and sexy ready-to-wear, shoes and accessories for the ball-buster inside all of us, the label was an instant sell-out when it launched on Net-A-Porter. This season, the label launches at Holt Renfrew, which the 46-year-old OBE toasted last week in Toronto. While in town, we took a peek inside one of her new bags for a reveal of what a champion accessories designer carries along for a 24-hour jaunt.

Afternoon Delight: The best eyeliner out there (seriously!)

Nars eye paint

A good eyeliner—like a really good eyeliner—has to meet a lot of credentials. It has to apply like a dream, last all day/night long and never smudge or transfer. It can’t be something you pay top dollar for, only to have it dry up in the package after a couple of uses. A good eyeliner also has to be easy to correct: that long-lasting quality can’t mean that once you apply it, any errors need to be sand-blasted off your skin. (Same goes for end of night removal—a few swipes of any ole makeup remover should be enough!) Now, with all of that to consider, may I present to you your new favourite eyeliner: Nars Eye Paint. It comes in 11 shades—from vibrant “Solomon Islands” blue, as pictured above, to classic black—glides on with ease, lasts without cracking or smudging and is just as easy to remove. Trust me when I say that this eye paint will totally change your eyeliner game.

What’s in your bag, Harley Viera-Newton? »

Last week, one of fashion’s coolest It girls took time out from spinning at Chanel, fronting a Gucci lookbook and collaborating with Dior Beauty to close Rudsak‘s 20th anniversary show during Toronto Fashion Week. A few hours before the show, we got to be ultimate creeps, rummaging inside her bag for daily go-tos. Amongst the items, we found the key to Viera-Newton’s signature look: long lasting beauty products. “Once I start DJing, I don’t really have time to touch up so whatever is on at the start has to stay on,” she said. Take note, working girls!
