Last Thursday opera lovers, patrons of the arts and faces who frequent Toronto’s party circuit came together to support the Canadian Opera Company for Operanation 9: Sweet Revenge. Attendees reflected the event’s theme of high-brow-opera-meets-pop-culture-concert well: Women in floor-length evening gowns navigated the many staircases of the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts with ease—proving there’s no architectural challenge a mermaid dress can’t master—while others used the Centre’s sprawling steps as seating throughout the night.

Actress Gabrille Miller looked stunning in a peplum’d dress from Lucian Matis Fall 2012 while Nelly Furtado had two costume changes throughout the night, starting with a gown by Denis Gagnon and later switching into a Holy Tee dress. On the third floor a group of Argo players attracted many eligible ladies—perhaps the popularity of The Bachelor Canada has given the CFL a new social standing? Read more »

TIFF 2012: Dinner with the divine Marion Cotillard in Dior Couture

Marion Cotillard and Bernadette Morra at the Rust & Bone TIFF 2012 cast dinner

Divine. There is no other word to describe Marion Cotillard, who floated into last night’s Rust & Bone 2012 Toronto International Film Festival dinner in Look 38, straight off the Dior Haute Couture runway. The tweed strapless dress with back peplum from Raf Simons’s first collection for the house will be a tough red carpet act to follow for stars attending TIFF this year. The dinner, hosted by Moet & Chandon champagne, was held at the subterranean Michael’s on Simcoe St. Cotillard arrived with co-star Matthias Schoenarts before later zipping off to the TIFF film screening at the Elgin theatre. At the dinner, Marion Cotillard politely posed with anyone brave enough to be compared to her aqua blue eyes, rose pink lips and hair swooped up into an elegant wave. Marion Cotillard’s royal blue silk satin slingbacks with yellow tulle trim were a hopeful sign that the skyscraper heel trend is finis (as of TIFF 2012 that is). The needle-toe shoes were set on a low comma heel, an innovation designed by Roger Vivier for Christian Dior back in the ‘50s.

Designer DIY: How to create a peplum in under 30 minutes. No sewing required!

It’s all about the waist this spring with croptops, drop-waists and our favourite look of the moment, the peplum. One particular Cushnie et Ochs look, complete with a slick patent peplum, caught our eye. So we decided to make it, natch (and for a meager $17, too).

Even The Hunger Games can’t resist the power of the peplum

Like the rest of the world, we hit the theatres this weekend to see the much-anticipated The Hunger Games, and while there are so many things we could talk about (Lenny Kravitz’s gold eyeliner! the flame dress!), we’re most fixated on the peplum’s rise to mainstream movie popularity showcased in the film. Effie Trinket, the seriously hopped-up escort/spokesperson, played so excellently by Elizabeth Banks, is a walking visual feast throughout, with her ombre’d hair and lips and her crazy nail art, but perhaps most awesomely, she sports several peplums within her zany wardrobe. Pictured above at “the reaping,” Trinket wears a purple multi-gathered peplumed skirt suit, and then later, wears this floral silk dress! We guess the odds of longevity are ever in the peplum’s favour.
