Nail art’s not quite dead, but the baroque period is definitely over, as these five fresh-from-the-runways trends show. We’re in a minimalist phase, embracing subtle detailing, a more subdued palette and considerably less sparkle.

Your first time at any international fashion week will teach you a valuable lesson: You need a fur. And not just any Margot Tenenbaum style granny hand-me-down. A fur so intricately patterned, multi-layered and artificially coloured, that it has to be designer. Given its place at the apex of the top Fall 2014 trends, you’d think recessionary times were long gone—it’s virtually everywhere, from a hyper colour mink at Altuzarra to a fluffy red dress at Prada. Wear it with caution or as Dior prescribes, dangle it over your arm like it’s no big d. Let the fur fly, scruples or otherwise.

Green glitter at Altuzarra, helmet hair at Alexander Wang: 9 beauty statements from the Fall 2014 shows

The eyes, hair and nails have been making most of the beauty statements so far on the Fall 2014 runways at New York Fashion Week. Here are our favourite looks and the top beauty trends so far:

Russet lipstick as eyeshadow at Helmut Lang
Helmut Lang’s textured, masculine collection was complemented with a simple, pared down face punctuated by a soft wash of lustrous burgundy on the eye. “It’s very minimal and clean but with a hint of punk,” said lead artist Hannah Murray, who painted Nars lipstick in “Deborah Audacious” (coming this fall) onto the eye and pressed “Heat” bronzing powder over it to set. She skipped eyeliner, mascara and brow colour, and kept the under-eye area clean to avoid a “pink-eye” effect. Read more »

We’re only a few days into the circus that’s Fashion Month and there’s already some exceptional front row celebrity watching to be had. Kelly Rowland and Hailee Steinfeld were two of the many celebrities attending the New York Fashion Week Fall 2014 shows this past weekend, sitting front row at Public School and Prabal Gurung, respectively. Both stars stepped out in black and white ensembles that borrowed some inspiration from the southwest, a trend that Chanel just may have helped start with their Dallas show.

Kelly Rowland debuted a new bob at the Public School Fall 2014 show—which included the label’s first womenswear collection—and while we were certainly getting some throwback Destiny’s Child vibes, we couldn’t look past her leather ensemble. The Tom Ford Fall 2013 top certainly helped Rowland tap into her Texas roots, as it incorporated some serious Southern-style fringe-work on the sleeves and hem. Rowland finished her look off with a white KTZ undershirt splashed with foreign text on the hem and thigh-high leather Christian Louboutin boots. The R&B songstress was definitely having a rock star moment with her ensemble.

Jennifer Lawrence Style: A chronological guide to the star’s Oscar-winning fashion moments

Jennifer Lawrence Style

See Jennifer Lawrence’s style from the beginning »

What can we say about Jennifer Lawrence that hasn’t already been said? The Oscar-winning actress seems to have bewitched us all with her off-the-cuff quips, non-conformist curves and natural born talent. To boot, Jennifer Lawrence’s style has evolved from the ill-fitting gowns of her early days to being the face of fashion’s hottest label. Lawrence first began making red carpet appearances in 2007 when she co-starred on The Bill Engvall Show. Her wardrobe consisted of age appropriate knee-length dresses and silk-layered strapless gowns. After a few years of enjoying relative under-the-radar status, the actress stepped into the spotlight with her Oscar-nominated starring role in Winter’s Bone and one very sexy red Calvin Klein body hugger of a dress which she wore to the 2011 ceremony. Later that year, she embraced fashion even more, wearing It labels like Miu Miu, Altuzarra and Prabal Gurung. With her megawatt starring role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games series, Jennifer Lawrence style spotting turned fever pitch with several world tours to promote the films. Her rising profile landed her as the face of Miss Dior accessories, resulting in one stellar ad campaign and several red carpet outings in Dior. And just when we thought we couldn’t love her more the 2013 Academy Awards happened. Her cake-like Dior Couture dress was one for the record books, but her tumble up the stairs, real-talk acceptance speech and red carpet middle finger wielding had everyone collectively swooning. Not to mention the well deserved Oscar for her role in Silver Linings Playbook at the ripe age of 22. Damn, girl. Fast forward to present day, and Lawrence is back on the red carpet circuit promoting Hunger Games: Catching Fire premieres. Follow along with us as we add new photos with each appearance. We’d find it hard to believe if you didn’t return at least once a day.

With the end of fashion week in Toronto marking the close of Spring 2014 show season, it’s time we looked back at all the trends that emerged. As much as the runway sets the pace for what’s to come for the top Spring 2014 trends, the streets play a major role as show-going trendsetters give us the relatable breakdown of how to wear what’s hot next season. Prints take two spots on our top Spring 2014 trends list through those with a painterly quality and those influenced by international cultures. At Hérmes, Rousseau-inspired water lily florals were printed on luxurious fabrics while at Diane Von Furstenberg, dresses and skirts depicting an African wilderness roared. As for fashionable time travel, prepare to keep reminiscing about the youthful 1990s, which haven’t ceased to get reincarnated season after season. Designers like Rodarte, Balmain and Jason Wu have reinvented the decade’s essentials yet again. To help with your daydreaming of long sunny spring days we’ve compiled the ultimate gallery of top Spring 2014 trends as dictated by the runways and our favourite street style stars in New York, London, Milan, Paris and Toronto! Feel free to let this be your guide to budgeting and creating closet space for next season’s must have pieces.
