Achieving voluminous, shampoo-commercial hair is an aspiration common to many of us—and with big hair being a big beauty trend on the Fall 2013 runways, now’s the time to embrace it. From ’40s-inspired curls at Bottega Veneta to frizzed-out styles at L’Wren Scott and Rick Owens, the big hair trend is excellent news for anyone with thick, curly hair. But if your hair tends to fall flat just minutes after a blow out and you don’t have a crew of hair pros working their magic, it can be hard to get the look at home.

Thankfully, new technology is making it easier than ever to pump up the volume on your own and get a Marc by Marc Jacobs-worthy style. Here are some of the latest gravity-defying products hitting the market and our tips on how to use them. Bring on the big hair! Read more »

I recently began colouring my hair and I think my usual shampoo and conditioner may be stripping my hair. What should I look for when replacing my go-to products?
Colouring your hair, whether it’s highlights a few times a year or a complete dye job every month, will impact the health of your hair. If you’ve just parlayed into the world of hair colour, you will probably want to look into a more hydrating shampoo and conditioner. In regards to hair colour fading or stripping due to your usual hair products, that’s very possible, especially if the formulas include sodium laurel sulfate, which is a soap agent that gives us the foaming action we so desire when washing hair, but also has a tendency to make hait feel straw-like! An award-winning duo like Pureology Limited Edition Hydrate Shampoo & Conditioner ($59 for both, pureology.com) is a safe bet for colour-treated hair that’s a bit shell-shocked from dyes. From each duo sold, $2.60 will be donated to Smart Water for Green Schools in association with Green Cross International to provide clean water to children in communities in Ghana. Read more »

Michael Kors Backstage Beauty Fall 2012

See how the Michael Kors Fall 2012 hair and makeup was done »

Featuring chunky cable-knits, fox furs and shearlings, the Michael Kors Fall 2012 collection was inspired by a well-to-do couple—say Clark Gable and Carole Lombard, or John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette—settling in at their cozy winter retreat after a day on the slopes. To achieve this fireside look, makeup artist Dick Page used Shiseido Lacquer Rouge in “Drama” on both lips and cheeks. The red liquid lipstick was applied with a foundation sponge on cheeks to mimic an in-from-the-cold flush then blotted on lips for a bold, precise effect. On the eyes, Dick Page swept pale gold and iridescent white powder over lids and into inner corners and finished with black mascara. Hair was just as cozy: After prepping with a volumizing spray for texture, Orlando Pita created a side part, secured it with a bobby pin and pulled the lengths into a casual, undone knot. Read on as we examine the runway look for Michael Kors Fall 2012 in full, complete with tips, tricks and the six products you need to try the hair and makeup at home. Read more »

Beauty magnified: Examining the aviation-inspired beauty look on Cacharel’s Fall 2012 runway

Backstage notes
Cacharel designers Ling Liu and Dawei Sun referenced Amelia Earhart as the muse for the ’20s-era coats, tapered trousers and knits with a masculine edge. The collection’s colour palette—heavy on the hypothermic blues—and kaleidoscopic prints were inspired by ice crystals forming on an airplane window.
