Worst affair just waiting to happen: How convenient for the mysterious new maid to show up just when the Earl’s looking to reassert his manhood. We’re not huge fans of Cora, but she’s certainly ten times the woman that this little missy is sure to be (see: first point).

Best fictional place we’d like to know more about: Mrs. Hughes continues to take care of Ethel and the secret baby, but still doesn’t have much sympathy for the situation she’s in. She reminds the ex maid that she got herself in trouble by breaking the rules, and that she shouldn’t have expected any help from the father in the first place. After all, Ethel did “what all men want to do behind the bicycle sheds every night.” Wait, what? Mrs. Hughes, we’d really like to know where these bicycle sheds are and what’s going on behind them!

Best tingles: Matthew!! What is going on down there? Did you feel your legs or… perhaps something more? If things are healing, we’re heir-y, heir-y interested.

Best death: We really didn’t think he’d have it in him, but we would love it if Bates was indeed responsible for Vera’s cataclysmic demise. Way to stick it to her, wuss! And in the middle of dinner too!

And that’s it folks, until next week! Stay tuned for our recap of Episode 6 next Monday February 13! You can catch new episodes of Downton Abbey Sunday nights at 9 p.m on PBS

In the meantime, tell us what you thought of the episode and you could win a DVD prize pack of Season One and Season Two, courtesy of eOne Films. And be sure to come back because we’ll be selecting a new winner each week!

Alright Randi and Paige … what makes the two of you think that it was Bates that did ‘er in?  I think it was the GMG that done it!!!!!!  After all, he suddenly disappeared, didn’t he????

HA! I loved your commentary on the latest episode! I am a newby to Downton Abbey – I really need to catch up and watch Season 1.

Your explanation of Daisy’s black armband is completely erroneous; servants wore black armbands when there was a death in the family. And like all servants she had absolutely no say over what she wore to work.

“The Cat who walks by himself” is, like, totally real literary reference and everything.  http://www.public-domain-content.com/books/Just_So_Stories/C11P3.shtml

I loved how the episode was setting us up for future potential plot lines – did Bates do his wife in? (I don’t think so but he’ll be accused, I suspect), will there be an affair with the new maid and Lord G (probably not)? Will Matthew be walking in the next episode (I think so). Can’t wait!!!

If last week was the most weepy episode, then this episode was the most soap operatic! Full moon is out at DA and the characters are turning antsy. Worst line ever: “Oh you don’t remember me, because I sound Canadian now!” Poor Edith, can’t catch a break…and neither can Anna (looks like hanging out outside courtroom doors is in her future) and Carson (‘Remains of the Day’ perhaps?) And yes, I was mildly turned on by Mathew’s “tingle”. Maybe Mary has other bedroom magic up her skirt..er, sleeves!

did anyone watch SNL’s DA’s spoof sketch? Brilliant!

Do you think they’re moving the plots along too quickly??

As always Downton lights my life and the dowager Mother in law (maggie smith) is irreplacable. The patrick crawley issue I feel was highly irrelevant unless theyre planning on developing it more later on.. but if he is who he claimes to be he wouldnt have been setting up every question for an asnwer, or playing elusive the first part of the trip.So yes hopefully this was for some reason needless filler (even though us die-hard downton fans im sure want more solid clues to the drama within)

The tingle bit was funny, I honestly thought he wouldnt lose his legs but would still be able to sire children! there you go Cora for a “full marriage!”
