As the seasons begin to change say adieu to your bright summer wardrobe and make way for fall’s muted palette of updated neutrals. Among them is the soft shade of grey, which made appearances on runways in Paris, New York, Milan and even Toronto.

The posh shade was a hit for outerwear at Alexander Wang, where models in cashmere hoods and plush fur gloves appeared in a variety of grey fur-trimmed coats. Outwear of the same ladylike shade made appearances on the Fall 2013 runway at Stella McCartney solidifying grey as an outwear go-to. Alexis Mabille’s grey and camel wool coat demonstrated a delightful yet unlikely combination of neutral tones. Chloe favoured the same colour combination, pairing soft grey fur coats with camel coloured bags. Antonio Berardi and Chanel produced equally covetable outerwear pieces in black and white wool blends, producing a greyish salt and pepper hue.

While some designers suggest stormy greys as accent shades, others encourage head-to-toe looks in the muted tone for fall. Toronto-based Jeremy Laing was heavily influenced by the grey fashion trend, dressing several of his models in solid grey ensembles at his fall 2013 show. Lanvin also embraced the grey fashion trend, combining different shades of grey in a single ensemble.

Several designers opted for furs in the soft, versatile shade. At Hermes grey fur jackets were layered over beige leather trousers and midi-length leather skirts for the ultimate combination of textures. Toronto-based DUY, presented cropped grey furs worn over denim, demonstrating a stylish yet comfortable look. Marni also dabbled in grey, offering a variety of luxurious alpaca coats and sweeping fur scarfs in the hue.

Grey and silver combinations at Helmut Lang added metallic flare to the runway. The glistening geometric panels on the label’s waist length coats and dresses add the perfect amount of sparkle to take the outfit from day to night. Balmain also combined the two tones, producing dazzling mini dresses with the brand’s signature structured shoulder.
