We may have arrived a little late to the party, but we certainly had a fashionable debut. For the first time ever, the secret, all-white mystery picnic, Dîner en Blanc, landed in Edmonton. Made famous by the city of Paris 25 years ago (and now taking place in cities all over the world), the rain-or-shine event forged on honorably last night through what my waterlogged white dress can only inflate to a mid-summer deluge.

If it sounds like I’m complaining, I am (or was). After all, we had to go shopping for a head-to-toe white outfit, bring our own white tables and chairs, plateware, stemware, napkins and flatware. The food we packed in our white picnic baskets had to be gourmet. We had to leave work early! In the thunder and rain!

Sometimes, if you’re willing to put in a little bit of effort, you get something extraordinary. Equipped with all of the above, upwards of 1,200 people descended on Louise McKinney Park (the secret location is only revealed at the very last minute) and it was some kind of magical.

Inside Park: Calgary’s fashion crowd hits Edmonton for a stylish industry party

Last month, Alberta kicked off a month of fashion weeks and events around the world with its own fashion gathering, unlike any fashion gathering the province had seen before. Hosted at Latitude 53’s new downtown Edmonton location, Calgary’s PARK  (Promoting Artists, Redefining Kulture) debuted into new, northern territory.

For anyone who knows the history of the two cities, (hockey) rivalry is core to their relationship, but with FASHION as its official magazine sponsor, Edmonton’s fashion industry professionals—from designers, boutique owners, hair stylists and make-up artists, to photographers, bloggers, writers and media personalities—came together to mix and mingle with their local community and connect with their southern counterpart.

Calgary’s Jessie Li and Kara Chomistek, co-founders and producers of PARK, are looking to expand the organization’s reach and connect the fashion industry’s movers-and-shakers by hosting events throughout the province (and one day, they say, Canada). “The Edmonton fashion community has been incredibly supportive of what we’ve done in Calgary and we want to continue to build and develop the relationships between our two cities,” says Li. The two young producers, a chartered accountant and an engineer, respectively, co-founded PARK in 2008 as an effort to provide emerging artists and designers with greater opportunities to show and sell their works.

It girl, Alyssa Lau: We profile the Edmonton-based Style Panelist’s sartorial choices and shopping picks for fall

It girl: Alyssa Lau

When it comes to crafting her own personal style, Edmonton’s Alyssa Lau is all about DIY. See her shopping picks »

Alyssa Lau’s one-of-a-kind shredded shorts, studded denim jackets and floral head wreaths are showcased on Ordinary Peoples, the blog she launched in 2011 with her cousin Kurtis. The 20-year-old chemistry student with a flair for all things sartorial also faces down outfit challenges on our Style Panel, which she says is “a great opportunity that has introduced me to so many inspirational bloggers.” This season, she has fallen for the slick leather jackets shown on the runways at Derek Lam, Givenchy and Proenza Schouler. “Leather is incredibly simple and versatile,” she says. “It can also add a rocker-chic aspect to an outfit that no other fabric can.” For this digital-age darling, inspiration and the tools to restock her wardrobe—which includes of-the-moment labels like Acne, Rich & Skinny and T by Alexander Wang—are just a click away. “I look at street style and fashion blogs and do most of my shopping online.”
