Last night’s MTV Movie Awards was full of shirtless, star-studded surprises. It’s typically one of the most fun shows to watch if you’re into celebrity cameos (last night’s opener had a record 50), F-bombs and zygotes and last night was no different, offering a veritable poo poo platter of all of the above. Cameron Diaz, Kate Upton, Leslie Mann and Nicki Minaj brought the sexy while presenting the awards for best male lead to Josh Hucherson, Zac Efron lost his shirt and Jared Leto made another real talk acceptance speech. Johnny Depp was there too, showing up to preside over the event by presenting the award for best film to the Jennifer Lawrence-less cast of Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

On the red carpet, there were a variety of dressed up and casual looks, ranging from Rihanna’s head to toe lingerie look by Ulyana Sergeenko to Lupita Nyong’o’s kaleidoscopic Spring 2014 Chanel dress.

A guide to Shailene Woodley’s style »

Move over KStew, there’s a new franchise face in town. If box office predictions are right: Shailene Woodley is about to become one of the biggest starts in Hollywood. As star of the upcoming Divergent, the 22-year-old actress is transitioning from a teen drama actress into a full-fledged A-lister. Known for her laid-back vibe and newly chopped hair, Woodley has been racking up red carpet marks in looks by Calvin Klein, Valentino and Jonathan Saunders.

For the past few months, Woodley’s been making the promotional rounds alongside studly co-star Theo James (a.k.a. Kemal Pamuk from season one of Downton Abbey). And while she describes her personal style as plain Jane, she favours relaxed statement making on the red carpet. Standout looks have included the bell-sleeved white Alexander McQueen dress and shoes worn at the Atlanta Divergent screening as well as the head-to-toe bodycon Jeremy Laing worn to the BBC Radio 1 Teen Awards.

Last night’s TV schedule had a fair amount programs vying for viewers. Between Girls, Lindsay Lohan’s Oprah debut and all too soon finale of True Detective, there was a lot of action to soak up. But perhaps less well known, but just as noteworthy, were the Canadian Screen Awards, held Sunday night in downtown Toronto and broadcast live on CBC. The 2nd annual awards show brought together stars from Canadian television and film—as well as some high-wattage style on the red carpet.

Presenter Jessica Paré, our March cover girl and Mad Men star, wowed in a dramatic black mini dress with lace panelled sleeves by Stella McCartney. She accented her short-hemmed look with modern white earrings, a strong emerald-green smoky eye and windswept up-do—looking glamorous yet still effortless and at ease. Pretty Little LiarsShay Mitchell also kept things a little more easy going, letting her lightly ombré-d hair go free in loose waves with an on-trend orange lip driving the look. Her black and white colour-blocked dress with deep-v neckline and and rib-cage cut outs had an athletic vibe to it—in a good way—and was paired with simple gold bangles.

Sometimes, no matter how big a star you are, you can’t nab an invitation to the Oscars ceremony. But perhaps there’s more fun in dressing up for fun and hitting the party circuit than stuck in a theatre seat all night. Just take a look at the Oscar parties frequented by many a celeb and star—the glamorous styles didn’t stop at the red carpet. Just because you aren’t nominated for an Oscar doesn’t mean you can’t join in on the fun, right?

Taylor Swift went for some drama in a black sequined column dress with a sexy sheer back by Julien MacDonald, keeping things in line with her usual look of relaxed waves and a red pout. In the same vein as TSwift, Allison Williams upped the ante in a backless Emilia Wickstead gown in bright bubble gum pink, expertly tailored with a full skirt and a high pseudo-turtleneck. Both pretty young things kept their jewellery to a minimum going for statement earrings and blinding rings—a new engagement ring in Williams’ case.

Although gravity may have gotten the best of her (again) at last nights Oscars, Jennifer Lawrence didn’t break a sweat on the red carpet looking breathtaking as ever. The starlet looked donned two contrasting yet equally jaw dropping on the red carpet during Hollywood’s biggest night.

As the current face of Christian Dior, it didn’t come as a surprise when the actress arrived dressed in a number by the fashion house. Lawrence arrived in a Dior Haute Couture red peplum gown accessorized with a Salvatore Ferragamo clutch and Brian Atwood pumps. Her jewellery game was certainly on point on the red carpet with a stunning diamond Neil Lane necklace that was draped along her back, reminiscent of last year’s winning Oscars red carpet look. With her blonde bob slicked back and quaffed to perfection, America’s sweetheart du jour was one of the many highlight looks on the red carpet.

For the Vanity Fair Oscars after party, Jlaw ditched her evening gown for a body-hugging and sexy mirror-embellished mini by Tom Ford. On the afterparty red carpet, Lawrence showed off the sheer back detailing of her dress, reportedly sans-underwear. With a bit of dark eye shadow and liner touch up, JLaw looked ready to go, every bit the vibrant 23-year-old.

We adored her Dior Haute couture but her Tom Ford sheer number was definitely game changer. Which was your of Jennifer Lawrence’s Oscars 2014 looks was your favourite?

Nothing brightens a blustery winter’s eve like some Hollywood glitz and glam. Like every good red carpet devotee, we were glued to the screen to catch all the glitz and glamour from the 86th Academy Awards in Los Angeles. We scoured the Oscars 2014 red carpet for our best-dressed actresses of the night, and without further ado, your nominees for Best Dressed are…

Breakout movie and style star of the year Best Actress in a Supporting Role winner for 12 Years a Slave Lupita Nyong’o pulled out all the stops in a periwinkle Prada princess gown complete with Fred Leighton headband and jewels. She’s been on a roll this season with carefully chosen frocks and gowns so it came as no surprise that she made the cut—we’re officially #TeamLupita. Fellow Best Actress in a Supporting Role nominee Jennifer Lawrence was next level in a red Dior peplum gown, which she yet again managed to trip on with cool girl ease.

Given her glamorous turn in American Hustle, it was only fitting that Best Actress nominee Amy Adams brought some retro glamour to the event. Keeping her best-dressed streak alive, Adams opted for a strapless Gucci Premiere gown, styling her signature red locks in a slick updo. Also sticking to the recent long blue dress trend was Sandra Bullock in Alexander McQueen. Always one to flawlessly flaunt her eccentric taste, Cate Blanchett maintained her ethereal style in a breathtaking appliqued gown by Armani Prive.

And of course, the Oscars 2014 red carpet wouldn’t have been complete without awards show mainstay Julia Roberts, marking 24 years since her first nomination, wearing Givenchy. Never one to be outdone, the legendary Meryl Streep celebrated her 18th nomination in 35 years, looking as good as ever in Lanvin.

With such a variety of looks and styles, it easy to see why the Oscars 2014 red carpet is arguably the year’s biggest bonanza of beauty and dazzling gowns. Closing out a season of terrific award shows styles with several Best Dressed nominee newcomers, it was tough to pick our favourite from the night. Who was your best dressed? Cast your vote now!

Is the blue dress this year’s definitive red carpet trend?

Blue Red Carpet Trend 2014

See all the on trend dresses here »

While the LBD is a term we all know and love, the acronym has a new meaning in the most recent hottest red carpet trend: the Long Blue Dress. We first saw the look back in January with Amy Adams’ amazingly vivid Antonio Berardi dress at the SAG Awards. Since then, Adams and others, have opted for bold blue hues over the ole faithful black. Is this a preview of what’s to come this weekend at the Academy Awards?

Wearing a head-to-toe colour can sometimes give off a certain vibe—a slinky red dress will always have sexy undertones for example—but blue is much more versatile. Take Beyoncé’s sequined blue dress by Vrettos Vrettakos at the Brit Awards and Amy Adams’ teal Frocktalk by Kristin Burke look for example. Two very different looks—one modern, the other old Hollywood glamour—were achieved despite being similar shades and both long sleeved floor length silhouettes.

Similarly, Olivia Munn’s plunging J. Mendel open-back gown featured a definite retro hourglass shape but was updated thanks to the unexpected bright blue colour. A red or white version of the dress would have felt a little stale or predictable—going for an unusual shade of blue makes gives the dress that little something extra. The same goes for Ellie Goulding’s recent Roberto Cavalli number where a rich hue of royal blue gives the fairly casual silhouette some oomph.
